Custom jewelry making is an applied art and you do need some specialized training in order to be a certified goldsmith, gemologist, or watchmaker and work at a professional level. You need to go to school and take specialized jewelry making courses to learn metalworking and metal smithing, metal casting, watch construction, gemology, gemstone cutting and setting, enameling etc. You can then get a job with an established jeweler who can teach you more of the business and you can hone your craft. Working with an established artist will also allow you to access furnaces and casting equipment which is expensive and not really within a hobbyist’s budget .
You can also do wire work, chain work and stringing and learn it on your own. There’s lots of places on line that sell pre-formed chains, metal elements etc, and you can add jewels, make necklaces and bracelets, earrings whatever you want with these pre-made elements, You can also hammer and twist wires into chain loops and make chains from wire. This takes time to learn, but you can learn it yourself from jewelry making books and websites. This is fine if you wish to be a hobbyist or an independent artisan.
However to be a certified professional you do need the formal training and the degree or certificate that comes with college level courses. You need to look for art colleges and applied art technical colleges, and research the standards for jeweler and/or watchmaker certification where you live. You will need to look for schools that meet the certification standards and apply to them. You’ll need to a bit of research into schools and requirements based on your level of ambition and what type of jeweler.watchmaker you would like to become.
