Engagement ring. The setting has one princess cut diamond to each side of the main diamond. Is it ok to have a round cut diamond in the center or will it look weird. I have no idea, that is why I am asking. The picture doesn’t look bad, but I wasn’t sure if there was some unwritten rule or something

I don’t think that would look bad. If you’re getting this for someone, maybe you should coyly ask what cut of diamonds they like. Or you could look at their other pieces of jewelry and see if they prefer round or princess cut. A combination of the two doesn’t sound bad, I’ve never personally seen it, but at least it’d be something that other people don’t have.
I wouldn’t think so. My ring is a bridge setting. The main diamond is a round and the diamonds underneath are princess cut. I love my ring and I don’t see a problem with mixing the two.
Nowadays it seems to be all about personal style and what you like. It’s your ring, and likely the most important one you will get. The old rules don’t apply anymore regarding style, color, stones or settings. So use that to your advantage! I think the unusual or not everyday things that everyone seems to fo is much much nicer. Go with what you like best and make it work! Good luck!
If you are designing your own ring or your fiance’s make sure you love it because it is for a lifetime. There is no rule on what shape stones to have next to each other.
My husband bought me an antique style that has a half carat diamond at the top and 18 cascading baguettes that catch on my hose and everything else. For all the money he spent I could have had a really nice single stone. He chose it because we are antique dealers and it glows very strongly in almost complete darkness unlike most diamonds.
