Diamonds can be found cut in the shape of a heart, or a triangle, or the more traditional shapes of squares, rounds, pear, and marquis. The actual quality of a diamond refers to the four “C’s” of diamonds; the cut, clarity, color, and carat weight.
The term ‘cut’ refers to the reflective quality of the diamond. The very best or highest grade for a diamond cut is ‘ideal’, followed by ‘premium’, then ‘very good’, ‘good’, ‘fair’, and ‘poor’.
Clarity refers to the flaws or the lack of flaws in the diamond. A low grade diamond will have visible flaws or blemishes. As you move up in the quality of diamond clarity there are diamonds that have flaws that are invisible to the naked eye. These diamonds are more costly. Flawless diamonds are very rare and are therefore very expensive.
The third ‘C’, the color quality, is used only for white diamonds. And in the case of white diamonds, the more colorless the diamond is the more valuable it is. This is because the more colorless a diamond is the greater brilliance it can display in terms of sparkle and shine.
Carat weight can be associated with the size and roughly associated with the value of the diamond. However, given the other factors that must be considered it is easy to see that even a small diamond can be very valuable. On the other hand, size alone does not justify a huge price. Being armed with information about the “C’s” of diamonds can be a real advantage to consumers.
