Question by Lena M: Can a round diamond be re-cut to princess diamond?
I received a princess cut engagement ring. My mother wants to give me the diamonds from her wedding band to put in my wedding band and my fiance’s wedding band. I would like all the stones to be the same shape – princess. Is this possible?

Yes
Unless there are all sorts of flaws in the stone, a good jeweler should be able to make it into a princess cut, however, it will be smaller after it is cut

The theoretical answer is yes however in reality from a practical point it is a total non-starter. The re-cutting will reduce the weight of the stones by around 60% and, adding this loss to the cutting cost, it will be like throwing money down the drain, you will be left with minute stones and a huge cutter’s bill. It will be far cheaper for you to sell your existing stones and buy new Princess Cut diamonds for your wedding bands.
Sorry that this is not what you want to hear but it is the fact of the matter, good luck with your wedding by the way.
A round diamond can be cut into a princess shape but you will lose at least 1/2 of the diamond. I just called my friend who is a diamond cutter to get the answer for you. : )
Hello, Sweet Niece of Mine,
Leave all the diamonds as they have been cut. The princess cut is from the man who loves you and the one you love. The diamonds in your mom’s wedding band are being given from her heart to you and Sean. Each diamond has a very special meaning. That is what will make the rings beautiful beyond measure. I love you, Aunt Rosie
