Tolkowsky mathematically calculated the properties of light and how it reflects and refracts within a diamond. Question by Sean: What are the ideal dimensions for an emerald cut diamond?
I’m so overwhelmed! I’ve been trying to read up on diamonds and I have learned alot over the last month. When it comes to emerald cuts, I have learned that the ideal l:w ratio is anywhere from 1.3-1.4, the cut is the most important thing to look for, and clarity becomes an issue if the occlusion is in the middle of the diamond.
Now, I am reading that it is also important to look at the table %, and depth % to be sure that it isn’t too deep, too shallow, etc. Can somebody just list out exactly what I need to be looking for?

My girl deserves the best and I want to give it to her. My budget is less that 13k for the diamond and I was hoping to find something that can resemble something close to 2 carats.

I’ve already seen some great answers from jewelers for lost souls like myself so, I would appreciate any help.

The Table of 84 is “good” not excellent. For a good Emerald Cut it should be about 67.
VS2 you are going to see the flaws.

Actually the price for nearly a carat is a little high.

diamond Quality is based on 4 factors, these are cut, carat weight, clatiry and colour. You have already said that your diamond is a 3 carat emerald shape, so that takes care of two of the quality indicators. However, the eveness with which the facets are cut is also important.

Since the size and shape are known, you will be most interested in the clarity/inclusions (or quality of the stone) and the colour (a range from colourless through white to yellow). These are discussed in detail below.

As for “ideal”, for most people there is a balance between what they can afford and a reasonable level of quality. I have always recommended a high quality retail stone as having a colour around “H” and clarity around VS2 – Even though these are far from “perfect” the faults will hardly be noticable to naked eye to the general public.

On another note, if someone gave me a 3ct emerald cut diamond, I’d just say thanks! and smile a great deal – Any 3 ct diamond is enormous. I have a goregous 1.2 ct diamond and that is huge!!

Cut – What is the proportion of the diamond? Round brilliant diamonds are commonly cut with 58 facets. The better proportioned these facets are on the diamond, the more light will be reflected back to the viewer’s eye. This is extremely important. When cut properly, the diamond will sparkle more. Diamond cuts are measured by the table percentage, so always ask for it. A good table percentage is between 55-60%. Cut also refers to the shape such as: round, pear, and oval. (and in your case, emerald)

Carat – How big is the diamond? Larger diamonds often cost more per carat due to their size. There are 100 points to a carat. Hence a 50 point diamond is 1/2 a carat. (There are 5 carats to a gram.)

Clarity – How clear is the stone? Clarity ranges from flawless (perfect) to I (included). Here is a chart:
Flawless: perfect inside and out
Internally Flawless: may have minor blemishes on the outside
VVS1, VVS2: have very very small inclusions. VVS1 inclusions can only be seen through the pavilion. VVS2 inclusions are more visible.
VS1, VS2: have very small inclusions. VS1 inclusions are harder to see than VS2.
SI1, SI2, SI3: have small inclusions
I1, I2, I3: have inclusions visible to the naked eye

Color: Diamond colors generally range from D – X for white and yellow diamonds. D is the whitest. Around S they become “Fancy” yellow Diamonds. One can also find green, pink, red, blue and brown diamonds – though these are usually irradiated.
