What is Diamond Carat Weight

The carat weight of a diamond is one of the 4 C’s which determine the actual value of the diamond, the others are the Clarity, the Cut and the Colour of the stone.
A carat is a fifth of a gram, there are, therefore, five carats to a gram and a carat can be divided into ‘points’ of which 100 points constitutes the carat weight.
The weight of diamonds are expressed in carats and points so a 1.05ct is 105 points.
One can then ask what is better value for money a 0.90ct or a full 1ct weight size.
The answer to this is what the eye actually can see in size difference between these weights.
In fact this is not as straightforward as it might seem as the question should be expanded to include ‘at equal quality of cut’. A heavily cut to weight full 1ct size diamond will look smaller than many 0.90ct weight size diamonds cut to another set of proportions.
This means that the heavily cut to weight 1ct diamond will be heavily discounted in value and one should be very careful, when purchasing any diamond, that one is aware of this very important parameter as it will make all the difference if one day you decide to sell or exchange your diamond for another.
So the next question is, incorporating the ‘equal quality of cut factor’, should one prefer say a 0.95ct to 0.98ct to the full 1ct weight and pocket the price difference.
Well if the eye cannot perceive a difference in size why then not I ask?
Diamonds of between 0.95ct to 0.99ct are very rare as it is not advisable to cut them to these weights as with a bit more attention it should be possible for the cutter to produce a heavier ‘cut to weight’ full 1ct than the beautifully cut and proportioned 0.95ct to 0.99ct. This means that most under 1ct weight size diamonds are ‘mistakes’ in fact errors where the cutting process has gone wrong and has produced a cut to weight missed 1ct size as a 0.95ct tp 0.99ct instead, not something that it is advisable to purchase.
This does not mean that some genuine beautifully cut examples cannot be found, they can but must be carefully selected by the buyer.
One must also take into consideration supply and demand. Even though supply is limited demand is such for the full 1ct size that there is always a clientele for them, not really the case for their smaller cousins, so in terms of investment potential, it is always better to purchase the full 1ct size than the smaller ones, the savings made, on purchase, will not compensate you for the loss in value due to the lack of demand so it is better to go down in either clarity or colour to remain within budget than to reduce the weight element by purchasing a 0.95ct to 0.99ct at a discount.
This is true for all diamond shapes and quality of cuts but especially for the round brilliant cut diamonds, fancy type of cuts are more prone to discounts where the quality of cut and beauty of shape are concerned when compared to the weight parameter.
